Phantom of the Floppera

People have made floppy drives sing before, but this is my personal take on it.

Features two 3 1/2″ drives and two 5 1/4″ drives connected to a PIC18f14k50 microcontroller. It interfaces to any MIDI source via MIDI over USB. Straight MIDI would also be possible with an additional small circuit and some minor firmware changes. This initial version can respond to all 128 MIDI notes, and pitch bends +/- 2 semitones.

What a cool reuse of vintage computer tech.

Hip Hop Panda Gets Groove On

This is one of those stories where the headline sort of says it all. Well, here’s some context – it’s not CGI, it’s not a 3D Pixar movie, and it walks a fine line between adorable and menacing.

An Atlanta Zoo panda having a hell of a time scratching his back against a pile of tree trunks ends up looking like he’s dancing. Or doing something lewd.

Worst Ice Skater Ever?

For its latest public performance, Improv Everywhere presented a completely novice skater so inept that he was stranded on the ice when it was time for the rink to be resurfaced. But as Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto plays, he learns and becomes a graceful, even masterful dancer. The man in red is Kenny Moir, a member of the Ice Theatre of New York who has been skating since the age of three.

The Importance of Punctuation

A recent post about a newscaster’s gaffe prompted me to seek out this classic clip. It was first posted on YouTube almost five years ago, but is worth viewing as an example of the importance of punctuation – specifically, that a period should signify a full stop.

The text as it was written for the newscaster:

“Good evening, I’m Ken Bastida; Dana is off tonight.

He was murdered and set on fire while celebrating his birthday. The body of Jimmy Frezshi was found by firefighters on Monroe Street…”

The result as it was read off the teleprompter:

“Good evening, I’m Ken Bastida. Dana is off tonight; he was murdered and set on fire while celebrating his birthday.

The body of Jimmy Frezshi was found by firefighters on Monroe Street…”

Girl Plays Jingle Bells With Cleavage Kazoo

Crafting a kazoo out of her cleavage and a straw? There's nothing this girl can't do with her ta-tas. I hear the Swiss government is hard at work developing their own pair for their army.

Soccer Goalie Celebrates Too Early

This video is from a match between two Moroccan teams. Khalid Askri, the goalie playing for Rabat, thought that he had successfully defended his goal. But the spin that he placed on the soccer ball caused it to slowly travel into the net after he had already turned away.
